Using Caller ID with FaxTalk Communicator.

Caller ID is a telephone service that provides the name, telephone number, time and date of an incoming call. It is primarily used to identify people who have called you when you are not available to answer the call. With FaxTalk Communicator, Caller ID name and telephone number information is displayed, if available, in the following areas:
  • Caller ID information is stored in the Inbox with every Call and Voice message.
  • The FaxTalk Communicator displays Caller ID information in the LCD window on incoming calls.
  • The FaxTalk Status dialog displays Caller ID information on incoming calls.

How Caller ID information works
Caller ID is completely handled by TAPI and the modem. The modem identifies the Caller ID information and TAPI routes the information to a waiting application that supports Caller ID. FaxTalk Communicator simply waits for TAPI to provide the Caller ID information and displays the information when provided. Because FaxTalk Communicator simply waits for Caller ID information from Windows TAPI, and does not contain any configuration settings for Caller ID, any Caller ID problems involve configuration problems with the modem or Windows TAPI.

To use Caller ID, the following is required:

  • You must subscribe to the Caller ID service from your local telephone company.
  • The modem must support the Caller ID feature and the correct modem .INF file must be installed.
  • Caller ID can only be used in Windows 95 (with Unimodem V installed), Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000. Windows NT 4.0 does not support Caller ID using its version of TAPI.

Note: Not all modems support Caller ID features. Consult your modem user's guide or the manufacturer for more information.
