Installing FaxTalk Communicator on Windows Server 2003 results in an error during printer installation.

When installing FaxTalk Communicator 4.5.x on Windows Server 2003 an error occurs when the installation program attempts to install the FaxTalk Communicator printer driver. The error indicates that the printer driver is not compatible with Windows Server 2003 because it is a Windows NT printer driver. In reality, the printer driver is in fact compatible with the Windows Server 2003 operating system but changes made by Microsoft to the default support for printer drivers in Windows Server 2003 significantly restricts the ability to install what is known as a "kernel-mode" driver. The printer driver used by FaxTalk Communicator is based on a kernel-mode architecture and as a result, the installation program encounters problem  when attempting to install the printer on a default installation on Windows Server 2003.

The FaxTalk Communicator software can be correctly installed on a Windows Server 2003 operating system by changing the default Windows policy for handling kernel-mode based printer drivers. To change the default Windows policy regarding the installation of kernel-mode based printer drivers:

  1. Click Start, click Run and type GPEDIT.MSC and click OK to open the Group Policy Object Editor.
  2. Under Local Computer Policy, expand the Computer Configuration, then expand Administrative Templates, and finally, expand Printers.
  3. Right-click on the Disallow installation of printers using kernel mode drivers, and click Properties.
  4. On the Setting tab, click Disabled, and then click OK.
  5. Close the Group Policy Object Editor.

With the change to the default Windows policy for handling kernel-mode based printer drivers, FaxTalk Communicator will install and function correctly on a Windows Server 2003 operating system. All of the features and capabilities of FaxTalk Communicator will be available when installed on a Windows Server 2003 operating system.

Note: FaxTalk Communicator is a single-user based application and installation on a server based operating system such as Windows Server 2003 will not enable FaxTalk Communicator to act as a server based fax software. FaxTalk Communicator will not provide client-server based fax capabilities. FaxTalk Communicator will provide full functionality on Windows Server 2003 when accessed and used directly from the machine running the Windows Server 2003 operating system.
